ROUND 10 – TIGERS V COWBOYS – FREE TIPS

Wests Tigers, 7th (5-4) Vs North Queensland Cowboys, 12th (3-6)

10 May 2018, 7:50pm (AEST)

What a crazy start to 2018 for both these teams. The Wests Tigers (WT) blowing most critics away with an exceptional start to the year, while the North Queensland Cowboys (NQC) have looked a shadow of their grand final team of 2017.
With the WT on a downward spiral and the NQC starting to find form this match is shaping up as a defining match for both teams.
The WT are coming off a 5 day turn around after a comprehensive loss at the hands of a revitalised Warriors team. This is their third straight loss after losing to the Eels and Knights by 2 points, but before this, it was round 3 where a controversial decision gave them their first loss to Brisbane by 2 points. Not known for their attacking, making 24 more points or more twice this season with an average of 2.6 tries, they rather stifle teams and have only concede 20 or more points 4 times this year and kept the Melbourne Storm to 8 and 10 points winning both games this year.
The NQC tale of the tape isn’t pretty reading but is slowing building having won 2 out of their last 3. Beating an inform Penrith by 6, a 10 point loss to the Raiders (1st time a raiders team has won in NQC since 2007) who out muscled their forwards in the middle and a Gutsy 12 point win over the Gold Coast Titans. Their average tries is 2.8 with only clearing 24 points twice and conceding 24 or more points 4 times this year.

The last five meetings have gone the way of the WT, winning 3, NQC 2. The Highest winning margin by the WT is 12 points, when the NQC won both their games by a margin of 8 points. Their last meeting at Leichhardt Oval was won by WT in 2016 round 22, 26-14. However both teams are vastly different since this match and this year is one of the hardest to predict in many seasons of the NRL.

Stats that matter:
WT and NQC both average the same completed sets of 30, making errors a key area alongside the penalties conceded. WT on average have 2 less errors (9) than NQC, but concede one penalty more (9), where an interesting stat we found was the average offloads. WT average 13 compared to NQC 6.
This highlights the form of the NQC and their “getting back to basics” aspect over the WST who look to take chances and strive for second phase play to dismantle defences.
For us, this aspect will be a large determination in the outcome of the game. NQC aren’t scrambling to well and rely on their structures to hold out their oppositions, if WT can maintain this average it will go a long way to possibly win against the NQC.
On the flip side, the NQC are starting to find their flow scoring 26 points in their last two winning matches mainly off the backs of the forwards doing their jobs well. With the increase in meters gained this is allowing J. Thurston (JT) and M. Morgan (MM) more chances at scoring points. JT is 2nd overall in try assists (10), MM is equal 9th (6) tied with L. Brooks. This translates to the overall points with JT sitting on 54, 10th, compared to E. Masters 40, 17th.

Team Changes:
WT – R. Packer is named to play at prop returning from injury, move S.Sue to the bench as 17. P. Godinet falls out of favour with J. Liddle coming back onto the bench also. Interestingly C. Lawrence is named at 11, even with a HIA protocol to follow.
Team analysis, C. Lawrence wasn’t expected to return until next round, highlighting the importance of this game. However Coach Cleary has resisted rushing back star off season recruit, J. Reynolds as with his team is looking at some forward punch vs this improving Cowboys pack.
NQC – No changes as you would expect, with S. Bolton being allowed to play by the NRL even with an indecent assault allegation.
Team Analysis, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. No early returns for the NQC and no new injuries as the NQC are starting to turn the corner and a crazy thought is they are only two wins away from the Top 8.

Possible Ladder position:
WT – could possibly fall out of the top 8 if games don’t go there way or maintain the log jam that is positions 4th to 10th on 10 points.
NQC – Could leap frog the Raiders to 11th this week with a win and Raiders defeat. Or fall behind the Gold Coast Titans if they defeat the storm.
We are expecting a WT team to come out of the blocks hard after their disappointment of last week. For us this plays into the NQC game plan and will allow them to roll over the top of the WT in the latter parts of the first half and second half.

Weather:
A glorious 14*c – 24*c day, mostly sunny with 30% chance of rain, <1mm

Suggested Play:
Don’t get greedy with this game, CrownBet are offering $1.92 for NQC line of -1.5. We have the NQC winning by 4+ points. The final winning margin will be defined by the WT fatigue factory, could remain close with a try difference or a blow out for the NQC.

COWBOYS -1.5 @ 1.92 (Crownbet)

STATE OF ORIGIN – GAME 2 – FREE TIPS

State of Origin Game 2

New South Wales Vs Queensland
21 June 2017, 8pm.

After the Shock demolishment of Queensland (Qld) by the New South Wales (NSW) team on Qld soil, what is going to happen in this game? NSW’s youth and game plan was second to none, which has forced 7, yes 7 changes to Qld.

Let’s take a look into this all important game.

New South Wales, 1-0-0.

A glimpse to possibly the future of NSW and Easily the best 80 minutes of a NSW team in the last decade. Coach Daley’s game plan was executed to the absolute best. Each player stood tall and grew a foot and it must be said, there wasn’t a bad player wearing a sky blue jersey.
Man of the Match, A. Fifita, well what can be said about this man? He had spiders on him and absolutely torn Qld middle apart. With his combination/understanding with J. Maloney they scored a magnificent try. Fifita has finally paid his penance for last year indiscretions and is playing with a clear head. We are extremely excited to see how he goes this game and if Qld can negate him.

The other Man we are excited to see is M. Pearce. He was playing his best game in his Origin career when he was hit by W. Chambers shoulder. This saw him being helped from the field and not allowed to return. With his form/desperation at club level, we really want to see him at his best again. For us his kicking wasn’t the best, but was improving on the big stage. If he can nail his first/second kicks he will only grow again. It’s potentially his night to shine and lead his state to victory, something he hasn’t been able to do yet.

Qld Be Alert:
With A. Fifita dominating game 1, don’t be too focused on only him. Expect NSW to see the first few hit ups and understand the tactics they will use to slow him. Expect if they rush him, for Fifita to deliver early ball to his halves and opening Qld edges up. If NSW can combat the slow ruck again and keep the speed up, Qld will struggle again.

For us, the cat is out of the bag and NSW will play almost identically as they have managed to select the same 17 people. It’s their game to lose, with only 80 minutes between them and a new era brewing.

Queensland, 0-0-1.

A massive shock to the Qld faithful as, well, NSW did a Qld on Qld in Qld. The middle third was destroyed by the younger legs of NSW and the Bench just blew the ageing rooster of Qld. Nsw was able to target C. Cronk when it was late in the tackle count, due to Milfords inability to be a precise kicker and C. Smith had his hands full in the middle of the ground.
This issue will be greatly reduced by J. Thurston pulling on his boots for this game. His short kicking game and club mates on his edge for defensive work and attack, adds a whole new dimension to Qld. He also adds a short passing game that is second to none, with G. Cooper riding shot gun, it’s a danger to be watched.

It has gone from focusing on one player to now 3. With arguably the greatest Full back ever also coming back in for Qld, B. Slater.

B. Slater completes the Qld immortal spine from the last 10 years. He will have the timing that Boyd didn’t in attack for game 1 and is a better defender. Adding to the revitalised team, he can organise the middle third to a higher standard. Just his presence will buy more time for Cronk, Smith and Thurston to try and create their magic for a Qld win.

NSW Be Alert:
A small kink in NSW defensive efforts was J. Hayne. W. Chambers has been purposely moved to his side to use his speed vs Hayne. It’s a big miss match for Qld, they will design a few plays to catch him out. If they can exploit him, they will be able to put a few tries down his side.

For us, it’s been a real pleasure watching this Qld Spine over the years. This is the greatest test they have had to date, their response is worth the price of admission alone.

Weather:

Traditionally this time of year in Sydney the grounds are slippery at night, luckily so far it’s a clear day and partially cloudy at best in the evening.
This will keep the game tighter than the first game and will help Qld immensely.

Team News (final team lists released an hour before game time)

New South Wales
For the first time since 1995, NSW have named the same team in consecutive games.

Queensland
After years of “sticking and picking” a second consecutive defeat (1st loss game 3 2016, 18-14) forced the Qld selectors to make massive changes. Seven in fact, so take a breath, here we go:

The Outs: A. Milford, C. Oates, J. O’Neill, S. Thaiday, N. Myles, A. Guerra and J. Lillyman.

The IN’s: B. Slater,J. Thurston, V. Holmes, C. Hess, T. Glasby, J. Wallace and G. Cooper.

What we take from this?

The new look Queensland is a Quantium leap from Game 1. The Immortal spine is reunited, the forwards are in form and the bench looks to be a ripper. The NSW team will have to be more aware of more trick shots now, rather than focusing its defensive structures around Cronk.

What we like about the NSW team is they know now that they can win, they have the players to compete and structures to defuse this lethal Qld team. If they can replicate their game 1 form, no Qld team could stop them.

For us, in this pressure cooker game, Qld should win in this arena with the team changes made. Their team is more balanced and now can strike from ever part of the park.
The line started at +5.5 and now into +3.5, we are expecting this to come in even further to 2/2.5.
To be safe though, with a slippery surface we suggest the below tip.

AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND – FREE TIPS

Australia Vs New Zealand
5 May 2017, 8:05pm (AEST)
GIO Stadium

Current Free Tip Record – 22 won-12 loss

As the majority of the players kick back and enjoy an early season week off, for all the good reasons, we are delivered some tantalising footy that is back to the roots. Representative round is a great initiative that has grown some legs and momentum letting the players from outside Australia and New Zealand their chance to perform for their nation. Let’s not get into the negatives this round and just embrace the games as they should be, so sit back and get ready for some passionate Rugby League, the Greatest game of all.
The first serving is Australian Vs New Zealand in the ANZAC test match, not played on ANZAC day. However the feeling will be in this game, a heavily criticised Australian team vs an impressive looking New Zealand team.
Australian, 1st in the RLIF rankings,
The Australian coaching staff has been absolutely hammered for their choice of players, going for “Loyalty” over “Form” by many commentators. With more opinions than there is sand, all that matters in the Australian camp is their belief in one and another. Yes, it’s that simple, under Coach M. Meninga the team has re captured some of the 1990’s early 2000’s form, where Australia was unbeatable. Australia has not lost a test match since 2015 and that’s having played New Zealand 4 times in that period. This will be a strong test of fortitude under Coach Meninga, as the press will be relentless, if his choices under perform this Friday night in the nation’s capital.
What can’t be argued is the pedigree he has chosen, with proven match winners across the park, in our opinion it will come down to the bench men. And Meninga has some monsters sitting on the bench waiting for their chance in this game. We are extremely excited to see the impact of T. Frizell, coming off the bench, we are expecting fireworks and then some. He has been in great form at club level and it’s his time to press for a Green and Gold starting position for later in the year.
We can’t forget about the Australian Captain in Mr Cameron Smith, in an outstanding career to date, he is the second person in History to play in 50, yes 50, test matches for his country. An amazing number, but like he has said “numbers just mean you have been around for too long”. We strongly disagree, he is the heart of this team and extremely humble which makes him the leader he is. Sure the backs get all ink in the history books for try scored etc, but if the books could be written about determination and leadership well, we could sink the titanic with his story. An outstanding career, which could go on for a few more years yet, watch him take control of the middle third and slowly work the opposition around to his teams strengths. He will then strike and deliver the perfect touch to get Australia ticking along.
Our bold prediction, Australia to have early possession and territory, with a short pass to A. Fifita to crash over for the first try.

New Zealand, 2nd in the RLIF rankings,
What a luxury it is to have the National teams spine (players 1,6,7,9) playing week in and week out at club level. This is a large advantage to New Zealand, as we have seen the development of these combinations the last few weeks. This may not show results on the ladder, but they are living and breathing footy together, add in the short preparation and it is a tick for New Zealand. With an impressive forward pack in great form at club level, there is cracking match ups across the park. M. Taupau has been near the best player week in and week out for the Sea Eagles and this game he won’t have to do it all himself. With J. Taumalolo at his metre eating best, S. Mannering aka the tackling machine and redemption man R. Packer, never taking a backwards step.
Traditionally where New Zealand has struggled in recent matches is the intensity from the bench. You know what is coming in the first 20-25 minutes, but if Australia can weather the emotion and physicality of this period, it could be trouble for New Zealand. With an extra two interchanges, there is a chance that they run with more “utility” options rather than “Beef” sitting on the side. Discipline is the key however, New Zealand really needs to play with a calm head, if they don’t the game will be taken away from them early and will make it hard to grind it back.
Our bold prediction for New Zealand, is a long range try off a Taupau offload to either half and R.T-Sheck to score.

Team news: (Final team lists released an hour before the game)
Australia is expected to run out 1-17, with both Boyd and Thurston expected to play despite being under wraps with slight injuries.
New Zealand has named a Squad, but we are expecting the obvious players to run out, with no obvious injuries being reported as they prepare in Sydney.
Their last 5 game report card:
2016 – Australia won by 26 points
2016 – Australia won by 6 points
2016 – Australia won by 20 points
2016 – Australia won by 16 points
2015 – New Zealand won by 14 points
What we take from this?
Australia has been dominate in their last 4 matches and not surprisingly this coincided with Coach Meninga taking over. He has brought his success from Queensland’s domination to the Green and Gold and is making the players “Rise” to new levels under his tutelage. The last time New Zealand won, was the last time K. Foran played for them, showing once again his importance to this squad. He will need to be at his best, along with Johnson, Taupau, Taumalolo and R.T-Sheck to keep them in this game.
For Us it will be a tight game, as long as New Zealand channel their discipline like Buda himself and take their chances it should be exciting from kick off to when the ground attendants round up the Penguins that reside in Canberra this time of year.

NRL ROUND 4 – EELS v SHARKS – FREE TIPS

Parramatta Eels Vs Cronulla Sharks
25 March 2017, 7pm (AEDST)
ANZ Stadium

Parramatta Eels 2-0-1, 5th
The Eels are looking like one of the most dangerous teams in the competition when they are on song. Last week they were out enthused by a spirited Gold Coast Titans team, who played really well. The Eels lacked an accurate kicking game, but that will be fixed today with the return of C. Norman. He is the lynch pin in this young team, playing well above his years and allows Gutherson to play more naturally. The Eels only had 3 forwards clearing the 100m gained, a sign that they just couldn’t get on the front foot last week.

Cronulla Sharks 1-0-2, 9th
The premiers of 2016, looked all out of sorts last week vs a St George Dragons team that did the little things right. The Sharks conceded 9 penalties in this game, missed 33 tackles and 10 incomplete sets, you won’t beat any NRL team with those numbers. Gallen did his best, with 159 meters gained, but his forward mates didnt help him, with next best Fifita 124m and bench player Bukuya only managed 116m. Again highlighting their poor direction and attitude in this game. This will need to change this week, otherwise it could be back to back losses for their title defence.

Team news: (Final team lists released an hour before the game)

Parramatta Eels

The big inclusion is C. Norman, returning from a ham string complaint. This pushes J. Robson out to no.21, assuming he’s insurance in case of a late injury to Norman.
T. Moeroa is suspended, which allows K. Pritchard to gain a starting jumper in 12.
Good news for K. Pritchard fans, with C King dropping off the 19, all but guarantees he’s fit and ready to go.
C. Norman’s inclusion is massive, he will sure up their kicking and their confidence will be up a few notches with him directing them around the park.

Cronulla Sharks

The welcome return of S. Feki, sees E. lee dropping out of the team.
Super league deserter J. Segeyaro could find himself on the bench as he was named in the final 19 players.
T. Williams has also been excluded from the final 19 men.
Unsure on the bench make up for the Sharks, as they have left G. Beale on the extended bench as well. We would expect 4 forwards to be used, to combat this effective Eels pack, he may take K. Capewell position, which doesn’t excite us at all.

Their last 5 game report card: Eels have won 2 games, Sharks have won 3 games.
Pirtek stadium is under renovation, hence why the game will be played at ANZ.

2016 – Round 17 – Sharks won by 10 points at Southern cross group stadium
2015 – Round 25 – Sharks won by 7 points at Pirtek stadium
2014- Round 21 – Eels won by 20 at Remondis stadium
2014 – Round 9 – Eels won by 18 at Pirtek stadium
2013 – Round 14 – Sharks won by 18 at Remondis stadium

What we take from this?
The more recent matches we believe are an accurate reflection of today’s game, with both teams having a lot of player movement since 2014. The game taken to ANZ, we feel will favour the Sharks, however we are finding this a game that will be hard to split.
This game is being played in memory of J. Mannah, who played for both clubs and unfortunately lost his battle to cancer, so the emotions will be high and we are expecting a cracking game. C. Norman’s inclusion makes this even harder to predict, as if he wasn’t playing we would lean towards a Sharks victory.

FREE TIP:
For Us, we can’t split them and are extremely excited to sit down and watch this game unfold.

BIG BASH – THUNDER v STRIKERS – FREE TIPS

Sydney Thunder Vs Adelaide Strikers, Spotless Stadium, Sydney, 7:40pm, 18 January 2016.
Domestic Twenty20 KFC Big Bash league

Last years BBL05 grand final, is this years battle in complete contrasting conditions for these two proud teams. The Thunder need to win this game, and well, to remain in contention for back to back titles. However in contrast, its the Strikers chance to revenge the grand final loss and almost guarantee that the Thunder are out of the finals, as the Strikers can only finish as high as 5th, depending on results.

The Thunder are on a 3 game winning streak after losing their first 4 games. Exactly like last years performance the Thunder are leaving their best cricket until the last month of the competition. With the injury to the under performing A. Russell, allowed C. Braithwaite to take his position and he looks to have inspired this team to a new level. He’s taken 5 wickets in 2 games and his energy is rubbing off on his team mates. With Ahmed and Green also proving to be hard to dispatch, this seems to release the pressure off Watson, Cummins and McKay if they go for a lot of runs with 1 or no wickets.
Batting wise, the Thunder were awfully worried about how to replace Morgan, but rest easy Thunder fans. Vince has batted well with 44 (off 28 balls) and 28 (off 18 balls) from his two innings this year and will look to expand on this again tonight.
The key for the Thunder tonight will be how Patterson and Vince can handle the early overs. If they can get off to a flyer and Watson brings his right bat, with Rohrer, Gibson and Braithwaite to follow they should be able to post/chase down large totals. As they have chased down 166, 161 and 100 in their last victories. The Key wicket of Dunk early will apply a large amount of pressure on the struggling Strikers batters and could be the determining factor for the Thunders win.

What can said for the Adelaide Strikers, apart from disappointing. Pre tournament betters were heavily backing them to win BBL06 and they have fallen well short for their fans with only two wins this season. Even with a victory tonight, they can only make it to 5th position at best.
From the teams perspective, they haven’t performed well as a team. It seems either the Batting team, gets a good score, but then the Bowlers fall short and vice versa. Unfortunately for both the team and spectators K. Pollard hasn’t performed to his highest quality in batting or bowling. This year the team has relied heavily on B. Dunk to lead the run scoring, if he fails the team seems to crumble. Hodge has been the only other main stay with the Runs but hasn’t had the same impact as Dunk. With Ludeman, Weatherald, Dean and Head not performing this BBL06 season is now lost. The Bowling team can only do so much with what the Batsman leave them to defend and this year they has been more misses than hits for the disappointing Strikers.
The Key for them to win tonight will be keep taking wickets to stop any partnerships. The Thunder bat deep, but they will need a wicket or two before the Power Play is completed, otherwise the Thunders openers could post a large total.

Free tip :
Player Performance, Green Over 20.5 @ $1.65 (Crownbet)

He’s cleared this total 5/7 games, with the Strikers nothing to lose, we are expecting them to try and take the bowlers for a lot of boundaries. This will create some poor shots and lead to wickets.

Below are his results in BBL06.
Vs Sixers 0 points
Vs Renegades 30 points (1 wicket and a Catch)
Vs Heat 62 points (22 runs, 2 wickets)
Vs Scorchers 34 points (14 runs, 1 wicket)
Vs Stars 40 points (2 wickets)
Vs Hurricanes 0 points
Vs Sixers 30 points (1 wicket and a catch)
