St George Illawarra Dragons v Gold Coast Titans Friday, July 15, 8pm, UOW Jubilee Oval

Both teams are coming off a bye and a loss in round 17 though Dragons are missing Dugan due to an injury in Origin and Tyson Frizell has also not been named to play in the lineup on Friday. Greg Bird has been named although if he is a late exclusion from the side Titans will be able to cover. Titans welcome back Ashley Taylor, Konrad Hurrell and David Mead. Round 17s loss to Warriors should not deter you from punting on the Titans in this round as Gold Coast played an already depleted side and added more members to the casualty ward throughout that game. Dragons have won the majority of the games against Gold Coast in general though Gold Coast have beaten Dragons 2/3 times at Jubilee Oval. The bookies seem to be very generous with this Gold Coast side week in week out forgetting that they travel very well. Titans are knocking on the door of the top 8 and will be looking to capitalise on this one.

Key Points
• Titans have beaten the Dragons at their home in the majority of the clashes
• Titans need to make the top 8
• Dragons origin players aren’t backing up. Titans are expecting key players back from injury

Newcastle Knights v Melbourne Storm Sunday, July 17, 2pm, Hunter Stadium

Arguably the best side in the competition vs arguably the worst side in the competition are facing off in this round which may be a somewhat interesting matchup. Earlier on in the season Newcastle stayed well within a shorter line that the bookie was offering while Newcastle were a much worse team. Newcastle coming off the bye after nearly pulling off a shocking upset against Canberra will be out for blood in front of their home crown at Hunter Stadium. Having said that, we are expecting Newcastle to give it their all but there is just not enough talent to take down an in form Storm side. Munster is said to be out and Craig Bellamy has implied that he may rest Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk. Resting the origin players would be a very wise move considering the run home to the finals includes games against Brisbane, Cronulla and North Queensland which will require a lot of focus. There is a chance of rain in Newcastle on Sunday though it is expected to clear up by game time. If the origin stars are rested and Tohu Harris is taking on the kicking duties again, expect a lot of tries and minimal conversions from Storm.

Key Points
• Last time they met in round 5 the final scores were 18-14 at AAMI Stadium
• Storm are second on the ladder, Newcastle are last
• Storm may rest their origin players and Munster is still out with an injury

Penrith Panthers v Parramatta Eels Sunday, July 17, 4pm, Pepper Stadium

Penrith have been playing very terrible football as of recent though they are capable of much more. The loss of Moylan, Mansour and Peachey last week really didn’t do them any favours against a depleted Cronulla side at Pepper Stadium. This week gets even worse for the drama ridden Eels as Corey Norman has pleaded guilty to some drug charges that resulted in him being dropped from the squad until further notice. Penrith had beaten a stronger Parramatta side earlier in the season and with the absences in the Eels side now, Penrith should be backed with confidence. Having said that, the line has pushed out to 10.5 and due to the fact that Penrith have not beaten anybody by over 12 points all season, the better odds can only be found in the margins. Moylan, Mansour and Peachey will all be returning to Penrith for this clash. Jennings will back up from Origin and will start on the wing in place for Semi Radradra who is out for 6 weeks due to a leg injury.

Key Points
• Penrith still have a hope of making the top 8, Parramatta are hanging on by a thin thread
• Penrith beat a better Parramatta side earlier this year at Pirtek
• Parramatta have won the last 2 games in Penrith

Sydney Roosters v Cronulla Sharks Monday, July 18, 7pm, Allianz Stadium

Roosters played a hell of a game last week against Parramatta before crumbling under pressure towards the tail end of the match and as we have seen, Cronullas players tend to be a bit sluggish after origin and especially being a Monday game, we are expecting this one to finish closer than some may expect. Cronulla are coming off 13 consecutive wins and are not looking to slow down. Mitchell Pearces presence has boosted the morale in the Roosters, as we have seen in their recent games playing remarkable rugby. With the exception of their last matchup against Penrith, Cronulla have been winning games within margins of 2 converted tries since round 10 which we’re tipping to follow suit. James Maloney will face off against his former side for the first time at Allianz Stadium which he is very familiar with. Sharks can be bet on with confidence though Monday nights tend to be lower scoring games so a small margin should suffice.

Key Points
• James Maloney is an ex Rooster
• Sharks are coming off 13 consecutive wins
• Roosters last 3 games have been decided by 4 points or less
